Dear Thinking About the Next Step,
This is one of the most common crossroads in the talent world – and the truth is, there’s no single “better” option. Boutique agencies and industry heavyweights simply offer different kinds of opportunities.
Smaller agencies often give people incredibly broad experience early on. You tend to be closer to every aspect of the process – from talent development and partnerships through to strategy and commercial growth. That level of involvement can be hugely rewarding, and many managers find it helps them build strong instincts and meaningful relationships with their talent.
At the same time, larger agencies can offer access to an entirely different scale of opportunity. Bigger infrastructure, global brand relationships, clearer progression and larger commercial deals can all create exciting possibilities – both for managers and for creators themselves.
That said, the grass isn’t always greener at a bigger agency – and it’s definitely not for everyone.
Some people thrive in larger organisations and love the scale, structure, and access that comes with them. Others realise they miss the agility and autonomy that often comes with boutique environments.
What’s interesting is that many people move between the two throughout their careers. Neither path is more “correct” than the other.
The key thing is not to view the decision as “moving up” versus “staying small.” The talent industry doesn’t really work like that, some of the most influential and culturally relevant agencies are still relatively lean teams.
Instead, think about which environment best matches:
- the way you like to work day-to-day
- the type of talent you want to represent
- your long-term career goals
- the scale of opportunities you want exposure to
Often, the right next move isn’t about size – it’s about cultural fit.
Hope this helps x
