The Creator-First Approach To YouTube

What the rise of creator power means for brand partnerships and how to unlock real impact on YouTube,

Written by Chloe McCullough, Founder of Chlo&Co.

The power of the creator.

We’re hearing it everywhere. We’ve seen the trend, the rise of creators, their brands, their influence. KSI & Logan Paul launching Prime. Kim Kardashian with SKIMS. Mr Beast with Feastables.

If you look back at the creator economy; where it is today and where it’s heading, the direction is clear. Creators aren’t just participating in culture; they’re shaping it.

So what does this mean for brands?

The rise of creators doesn’t mean they’re becoming competitors (at least not for most brands). What it does mean is that brands have a huge opportunity to collaborate with them. To rethink how they work with creators and adapt accordingly.

YouTube creators have earned audience attention for one core reason: trust. They built their communities not by selling, but by entertaining, relating, and educating. There was no ulterior motive, just connection. That’s why creators have entered the chat with such force.

Traditionally, brands have approached creator partnerships in a transactional way: “promote this product and we’ll pay you.” But audiences are seeing through #ads. The strategy is aging, and brands need to evolve.

To win today, brands must treat creators differently. They must give them their trust. Give them genuine creative space, invite their opinions and give them access to what’s being built. In return, brands gain deeper audience connection, stronger attention, and a view into how the brand can show up more authentically.

And there’s no platform where this matters more than YouTube.

A Creator-First Approach in Practice

When I first started running YouTube channels, I worked with a brand deeply affiliated with creators but we weren’t leveraging them properly.

So we changed our approach.

We spent real time with the creators we were in partnerships with. We went to their shoots. We listened to their journeys. We stepped into their world. And in return, we were transparent with them: our goals, our challenges, our vision and we asked them to help us build something special.

We applied everything we learned into our YouTube strategy,  and the results were exceptional. After 12 months, we saw a 425% increase in engagement and a 235% uplift in viewership. That growth didn’t come just from smarter content decisions; it came from a genuine creator-first mindset. We let creators have a voice, and because of that, an audience showed up for us on YouTube every single week.

How Can Brands Actually Implement a Creator-First YouTube Strategy?

Here’s the practical piece so many brands miss:

1. Bring creators in early.
Not once the storyboard is locked. Invite them into ideation, that’s where their value is strongest.

2. Co-create the content.
Let creators influence the format, tone, pacing, and storytelling. They know what feels natural and what resonates with their audience, this will engage deeper with yours too.

3. Share your data.
Give creators insight into what’s performing and why. Watch time, retention curves, traffic sources. Data helps them make the content even better.

4. Measure connection, not just conversions.
YouTube rewards depth. Track watch time, retention, click-throughs and take note of the comments. Long-form success is built on trust, not just impressions.

Treat Creators Like Creative Partners – Not Distribution

Many brands still treat creators as pure media inventory: a reach play.
But on YouTube, creators are the culture. They aren’t just distributing your message; they are shaping how it’s delivered and injecting authenticity into it.

Creators are the face of the platform. They are the reason audiences return to YouTube daily. And they are the experts in long-form digital content, 46 of the top 50 Global channels on YouTube are creator-led or run by creator-led companies. That’s not a coincidence.

To unlock YouTube, brands need to drop the guardrails. Invite creators into the creative process. Let them be themselves. Let them be unscripted. Let them bring their personality.

This is how you create content that feels real and how you build a long-term community that will connect over a prolonged period of time.

The brands that take a step back and collaborate with creators rather than simply integrating them into content, will be the ones that built lasting communities on YouTube.
