HOT TAKE: There Will Never Be Another Chicken Shop Date

Chicken Shop Date took Amelia Dimoldenberg from youth magazine interviews to mainstream stardom. Could any creator-led format ever repeat its impact?

Amelia Dimoldenberg’s decision to end Chicken Shop Date closes a creator journey that may be impossible to repeat.

After 12 years of awkward flirting, fried chicken and increasingly famous guests, Amelia Dimoldenberg has announced that Chicken Shop Date is coming to an end. A few final episodes will be released before she moves on to her next chapter.

Chicken Shop Date began as a youth magazine column when Dimoldenberg was 17, before moving to YouTube in 2014. It grew from interviews with UK grime artists into a globally recognised series featuring Billie Eilish, Jennifer Lawrence, Paul Mescal, Sabrina Carpenter and Andrew Garfield.

The show now has more than 3.4 million YouTube subscribers and, according to The Guardian, has generated more than 34 million hours of viewing worldwide.

But its real impact goes beyond the numbers.

Chicken Shop Date turned an idea developed at a youth club into a globally recognised piece of entertainment without losing the character, setting or creative control that made it distinctive. Its success was not immediate. The format was given years to develop its voice, build credibility and grow an audience before brands, publicists and the wider entertainment industry fully understood its value.

That kind of slow build would be much harder today. New creator formats are expected to arrive with a polished visual identity, produce content across multiple platforms and demonstrate their commercial potential almost immediately. Creators are encouraged to optimise every idea for clips, algorithms and brand partnerships before it has been given the space to develop naturally.

Chicken Shop Date worked because it never felt as though it was following a proven formula. The industry only understood the formula after Dimoldenberg had created it.

Its credibility also came from the journey. The A-list names did not make Chicken Shop Date relevant. They wanted to appear because Dimoldenberg had already spent years building something culturally important. By the time Billie Eilish, Jennifer Lawrence, Paul Mescal and Andrew Garfield entered the chicken shop, an invitation had become a marker of relevance in its own right.

Dimoldenberg’s personal rise feels equally difficult to recreate. She moved from interviewing emerging artists in local chicken shops to hosting the Oscars red carpet and developing projects across television and film, all while retaining the voice that made her successful online. She did not have to reinvent herself to be accepted by traditional entertainment. Instead, traditional entertainment adapted to her.

Her mainstream career was not handed to her by television executives or built through a carefully managed transition away from the internet. It was the result of an independently owned format becoming too influential for the traditional industry to ignore.

Another creator-led show will inevitably break through, but its success will not look like Chicken Shop Date. The format belonged to a particular moment in internet culture, when an idea could grow slowly and imperfectly. Its impact came not only from what Dimoldenberg created, but when and how she created it

Chicken Shop Date did not follow the creator-to-mainstream blueprint. It created it.
