In the rush to turn content creation into a full-time business it’s easy for talent to fall into the “paid deal trap.” When management focuses exclusively on churning out sponsored posts to hit immediate commercial targets, the creator is the one who pays the price. Suddenly your feed changes from an authentic space that a community loves into an exhausting rotation of disconnected brand scripts. The creator stops being a trendsetter and turns into a digital billboard. It can be a slippery slope and that is one of the fastest ways to kill a talent’s longevity.
True managers understand that a sustainable, high-performing career isn’t built on one-off £50,000 invoices. It is nurtured through strategic, organic micro-steps. It requires a rare kind of patience in an industry that moves at lightning speed.
The best in the business are real strategists. They see their clients for who they are, understand where they want to go over the next decade and break that massive vision down into bite-sized, everyday steps. When a talent wants to open a new door, pivot their content or explore a completely different vertical, I always work from the top down, ensuring to have a deeper understanding of my talents and that they need to utilise PR, amongst all other elements of the creator ‘promotional and awareness toolbox. I’m also lucky to be part of a management agency that truly gets it. Who firmly believes that long-term brand positioning and organic posting are just as critical as immediate billings.
When building a career trajectory, I believe it’s crucial to get the creator to name their absolute dream brands – the ones at the very top of the vertical they want to break into. From there, we work backwards, targeting the right spaces, accepting the right giftings and attending the right events. It is about encouraging talent to realise they actually belong in that room, before proving it to the industry through consistent, organic content. Think of it as a “you are what you say you are” philosophy!
This growth is done in intentional stages, using micro-steps to bridge the gap whilst protecting a talent’s creative longevity. This process is all about elevating their overall presence, successfully shifting them away from standard, one-off influencer campaigns and transitioning them into the right industry spaces, backed by deep, long-term brand relationships.
The real value add for them is that you can actually see this groundwork paying off in real-time. You start noticing an immediate shift, from a sudden surge in positive outbound responses to a clear increase in high-calibre inbound inbox activity. The exact brands, events and gifting opportunities you’ve been aiming for suddenly start reaching out to you.
A major part of this shift comes down to rethinking PR gifting. There is a stubborn myth in the creator community that accepting a PR gift without a fee attached diminishes your value. When management builds a rigid wall against PR seeding lists because “the talent doesn’t post for free,” it isn’t protecting you, it’s isolating you. When approached with a clear strategy, accepting PR gifting is one of the most empowering moves you can make for your creative control. The beauty of a paid campaign is financial security, but it often comes wrapped in tight, corporate restrictions. PR gifting offers the exact opposite – complete creative freedom. When a beautifully-curated package arrives with no strings attached, you hold all the cards. You decide if it fits your vibe, how it’s styled and how your audience sees it.
Weaving a gifted item seamlessly into your daily life, styling a piece purely out of genuine affinity, shows your audience that your taste cannot be bought. It reinforces your role as a trusted curator. Moreover, it is the ultimate, low-pressure audition for future five-figure retainers. Through my own organic conversations with people brand-side, this is exactly what they are crying out for. Influencer marketing managers and brand directors are exhausted by the flash-in-the-pan nature of purely transactional deals. They need consumer retention and real return on investment and they know you only get that by building something from the ground up or focusing on a creator’s pre-existing favourites. When a brand’s internal team sees you showcasing their product organically you establish a natural, undeniable aesthetic alignment that makes you the obvious choice when massive ambassador budgets open up next quarter.
The same long-term logic applies to event attendance. Turning down an exclusive event invitation just because there isn’t an upfront appearance fee attached is a massive missed opportunity. Events are where the human beings holding the marketing budgets actually sit. Sending a creator into that room, impeccably styled, confident, and brief-ready, allows them to build face-to-face rapport with the decision-makers. When you show up, engage genuinely and support a brand at their launch or runway show, you cease to be just a profile picture or a row of stats in a crowded inbox. You become a tangible part of their community.
When those brand managers sit down a few months later to assign heavy financial backing to a campaign, they should instantly remember the charming, highly professional creator they shared a drink with over a cold email pitch from an agency they’ve never heard of. Unpaid event attendance is networking capital; it plants the seeds of trust that grow into lucrative, paid success.
Ultimately, this strategic groundwork is what cuts through the noise. In a completely oversaturated industry where creators are constantly battling unpredictable algorithms and fighting for the exact same briefs, this strategy changes the game. It is what opens the door for much bigger deals and secures those coveted, long-term brand retainers, bringing real career and financial stability in an ever-changing digital landscape.

Incredibly insightful, thanks Astelia!
