YouTube: The New Launchpad for the Next Generation of Animation Franchises

How creator-led animation is turning YouTube into a testing ground for global IP, from SolarBalls to studio-backed franchises.

By Isabel Isabel Dawn Salise – Marketing Manager at Telos Media.

For decades, animation franchises were born inside closed systems. Networks funded pilots, executives approved seasons, and distribution was limited to those who secured institutional backing. Many promising animated concepts never saw the light of day simply because breaking into the industry was nearly impossible for newcomers.

That system has fundamentally changed, thanks to Youtube and a new generation of creators.

YouTube is no longer “just a video-sharing platform”. It has become a decentralized incubation engine for IPs. It is now a viable launchpad for full-scale animation franchises once limited to network-backed studios and major production houses.

Creators could test storytelling formats, refine visual styles, and experiment with new concepts in real time. Most importantly, they can validate their IP’s marketability through viewer data and  audience behaviour.

How YouTube Powers Animation Franchise

YouTube lowers the barriers to creating animation. Today, affordable animation software and digital tools are widely accessible. Creators no longer need massive studio infrastructure to begin production. Talent can also be sourced globally through online hiring platforms, enabling remote collaboration at significantly lower costs compared to traditional studio models.

Distribution is instant: creators can upload directly and reach international audiences from day one. Real-time feedback is built in. Comments, likes, shares, and analytics like watch time and retention give immediate proof of what works…something traditional TV pilots could never offer.

On YouTube, every video essentially acts as a pilot. Viewer engagement and retention provide measurable demand, allowing creators to refine characters, stories, and formats quickly.  This combination of easy production, instant distribution, and transparent feedback makes YouTube a testing ground and growth engine for animation franchises.

SolarBalls – A YouTube-First Franchise in Action

Telos Media’s flagship show, SolarBalls, brings planets and space objects to life through humour and character-driven storytelling, blending education with entertainment.

Their flagship show SolarBalls brings planets and space objects to life through humor and character-driven storytelling, blending education with entertainment. The series began with short, 1-2 minute videos answering questions, such as, “Can life survive on Mars?” This format attracted an audience interested in science and education. Over time, the series gradually introduced deeper character development and ongoing story arcs, expanding into broader entertainment.

Audience growth has been entirely organic, without paid promotion. From the beginning, viewer feedback has played a central role in shaping content. Metrics such as retention, comments, and engagement guide episode development and character evolution, allowing the series to grow alongside its community.

As the channel grew, key milestones followed: a steadily expanding subscriber base (now approaching 2 million subscribers), consistent view growth, and a highly interactive fan community. Community involvement played a crucial role, with viewers contributing ideas, theories, and fan art that further reinforced the brand’s identity.

The brand’s expansion extended beyond YouTube. SolarBalls is now streaming on major platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Kidoodle, and Tencent (China’s Netflix). In parallel, its merchandise operations have demonstrated strong commercial viability, generating over $1 million in sales through Shopify alone.

The next phase for the SolarBalls universe is a feature film, Astrodude: SolarBalls Movie, which is currently seeking support through a Kickstarter campaign. This film marks a significant step in expanding the franchise, bringing longer-form storytelling to the characters and universe audiences have grown to love. Beyond that, they are also exploring additional formats, including games, an immersive dome film, and other interactive experiences to deepen the SolarBalls universe.

The Rise of Creator-Led Franchises

SolarBalls follows a path similar to other YouTube-first phenomena like The Amazing Digital Circus by GLITCH Productions, which launched independently before achieving global reach and merchandising success, and Hazbin Hotel, which began as a YouTube pilot before attracting studio backing.

Brian Robbins, the President & CEO of Paramount Pictures and a longtime media entrepreneur behind hits like Smallville and All That, recently launched Big Shot Pictures with a clear strategy: develop animated series on YouTube first, then bring the top-performing IP to theaters through a Sony Pictures deal. This is a perfect example of how Hollywood and the creator economy are beginning to synchronize—YouTube has become the ultimate testing ground for new ideas.

This strategy signals a major shift in how animation, and Hollywood itself, discovers hits. The next decade will likely be defined by IPs that earn their audience on YouTube first, with the strongest ones graduating to theaters, streaming platforms, and global merchandising.

The most compelling franchises of the future may not come from traditional studio pipelines…they will come from creators who understand both storytelling and the digital ecosystem.

The next generation of blockbuster franchises won’t start in Hollywood boardrooms…they’re being born on YouTube today.
